He Groans With You: The Compassion of Christ in Mark 7
In Mark 7:31–37, Jesus heals a deaf and mute man with remarkable tenderness — taking him aside, touching him, and sighing deeply before speaking the word that sets him free. Leon Pretorius shows that this sigh is no casual breath but a groan of compassion, the same word used in Romans 8 and 2 Corinthians 5 to describe creation and believers longing for final redemption. Because Jesus took on flesh and suffered among us, he is a High Priest who truly sympathises with our weaknesses — and he invites us to draw near to the throne of grace with confidence.
