She’s Not Crazy. He’s Not Cold. You’re Wired Differently — On Purpose.
Every married person has had the moment. You stare at your spouse and think: How can you possibly see it that way? He processes a crisis by going quiet. She processes it by talking it through. He feels loved when she respects his decisions. She feels loved when he sits down and listens. He can think about literally nothing. She cannot switch off.
In South Africa, where cultural expectations around masculinity and femininity run deep — and are too often distorted into domination and silence — these differences become landmines. He withdraws because that’s what “strong men” do. She stops trying because she’s been told to just submit and endure. The result? Couples who’ve been together for decades but live in a cold, joyless standoff — not divorced, but not truly married either.
But here’s what Scripture reveals: those differences are not the problem. They are the design.
Genesis 1:27 says God created mankind in His image — male and female. Neither one alone reflects the full picture. It takes both, woven together, to display the character and glory of God. That’s why marriage is the most significant relationship on earth. Nothing else comes close.
And God didn’t just make you spiritually different — He made you genetically, hormonally, and neurologically different. Male bodies carry up to twenty times more testosterone, driving strength, spatial reasoning, and risk-taking — traits designed for the leadership role Scripture calls husbands to. Female bodies produce more oxytocin and prolactin, fuelling social bonding, nurturing, and relational depth — traits designed for the helper role Scripture gives to wives. Even your brain structure differs: his is wired for goal-oriented, big-picture connections; hers for language, empathy, and social processing.
These aren’t stereotypes. They’re design features. And once you understand them, you stop trying to fix your spouse and start learning to work with how God made them.
The question isn’t: Why can’t she be more like me? It’s: How can I understand the person God gave me — and love them according to their design, not mine?
Want to go deeper? In the full sermon, we unpack the science behind these differences — from chromosomes to brain structure — and why the world’s claim that “gender is assigned at birth” gets the Bible’s design exactly backwards. You’ll also hear why marriage is the single greatest reflection of God’s glory on earth, and what the creation mandate in Genesis 1 reveals about why your spouse’s quirks aren’t flaws — they’re features. Listen to the full message, and prepare for the next two parts where we help wives understand the man they married, and husbands understand the woman they lead.
