Three Things Your Husband Needs You to Know — But Will Probably Never Tell You
If you had to choose between feeling alone and unloved, or feeling inadequate and disrespected — which would hurt less? Surveys show men overwhelmingly choose unloved. Women choose disrespected. We are profoundly different — and in South African marriages, where cultural pressure makes it nearly impossible for men to show vulnerability, those differences silently destroy from the inside.
Scripture has always known this. God doesn’t command wives to love their husbands — He commands them to respect and submit (Ephesians 5:22). Not because love doesn’t matter, but because respect is the language your husband hears as love. When you correct him publicly, question his motives, or speak with contempt, he doesn’t hear a concerned wife. He hears: she doesn’t believe in me.
Second, your husband is probably far more afraid than he lets on. Behind the steady face is a man wondering whether he’s providing enough, leading well enough, doing enough. You hold extraordinary power here. You can heap weight onto his shoulders through constant dissatisfaction — or lighten the load with honest words: I’m with you. I believe in you. Proverbs 14:1 is blunt: a wise woman builds her house, but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands.
Third, when your husband goes quiet during conflict, he’s not abandoning you. His brain is wired to process one thing at a time. He shuts down so he can come back with something helpful — not hurtful. Don’t chase him down the hallway. Ask when you can talk, and trust him to return.
