Before the Crown, the Cross: The Messiah Who Must Suffer

Passage: Mark 8:27-38, Isaiah 50:5-8, Isaiah 53:3-7, Psalm 118:22, Psalm 22:1,7-8,18, Psalm 16:8-10, Hebrews 10:5-7, 1 Kings 13:1-24, 1 Peter 4:1-3

Before the Messiah would wear his crown, he had to carry a cross. In this sermon from Mark 8:31-33, Leon Pretorius shows how Jesus intentionally committed himself to a path of suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection — a path laid out in Old Testament prophecy and fulfilled by his resolute obedience to the Father. When Peter rebuked him, Jesus identified his action as a deviating Satanic temptation and, in doing so, laid the foundation for what true discipleship looks like: setting your mind on God's interests, not man's.
