Every generation faces the same crowded marketplace of voices — philosophers, traditions, spiritual teachers, scientists — each promising answers to life’s deepest questions. How do you know who is right? And more importantly, how do you know?

The Problem: Too Many Voices
From Plato to Marx, from ancestral traditions to Eastern philosophy, humanity has never lacked for teachers willing to tell us how to live. Leon Pretorius opens this study by naming the uncomfortable reality: these voices give vastly different answers, and the reason is their vastly different sources — human reason, mystical experience, inherited tradition, or empirical science. None of these, however, can carry the weight of ultimate authority, because all of them are the guesses of creatures, not the word of the Creator.
General Revelation: The Heavens Declare
Psalm 19:1-2 reminds us that God has never left humanity without a witness: ‘The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.’ This general revelation — written into creation itself and echoed in every human conscience — is available to all people at all times. Romans 1:20 confirms that God’s eternal nature and power are clearly evident in what He has made. Yet as Leon explains, this witness, though real and powerful, cannot answer our deepest questions about purpose, meaning, and salvation. For that, we need God to speak more directly.
Special Revelation: God Has Spoken in His Son
Hebrews 1:1-2 traces the beautiful arc of God’s progressive self-disclosure: ‘God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son.’ From Abraham to Moses, through the succession of Old Testament prophets, and culminating in Jesus Christ himself — God has not left us to grope in the dark. That revelation was then entrusted to the Apostles and Prophets who laid the foundation of the church (Ephesians 2:19-22), and it is now preserved completely for us in Scripture.
As 2 Timothy 3:16 declares, this word is breathed out by God — inspired, sufficient, necessary, clear, and inerrant. It is not one voice among many. It is the voice of the One who made all things, and it speaks with an authority that every other voice must answer to.
The Bible: Sufficient for Every Question
Leon draws a striking and practical conclusion: because God has spoken fully and finally through Christ and through the completed Scriptures, we neither need nor should expect ongoing special revelation. The foundation has been laid once. Every question about purpose, happiness, how to live, and why we die — the Bible is sufficient to answer all of them. No philosophy, no ancestral tradition, no inner experience needs to fill any gap, because there is no gap. God has spoken.
